Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Jacksonville typically runs $130 – $250 installed, depending on whether one side or both need replacing and which Clopay series your door belongs to. We stock Clopay-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so most jobs are completed same-day, often within one visit. The usual story we hear: you’re heading out for the morning, hit the opener, and hear a metallic snap followed by the door jerking to one side or refusing to move at all. That’s the lifting cable letting go, and on a Clopay door it frequently takes the drum with it or leaves the drum grooved enough that it needs replacing too.

This page is the guide we wish every Clopay owner in Jacksonville had before they called us. You’ll learn which models this applies to, what actually failed, what it costs, and whether you should even touch it yourself. By the end, you’ll know the name, the price, and the fix before we ever pull into your driveway.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Cable and drum failures happen across nearly every Clopay residential line we service in Jacksonville: the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, Bridgeport, Intellicore, and Reserve Collection doors all use a torsion spring system with lift cables wound onto grooved drums at each end of the torsion tube. The key difference is drum geometry. Clopay pairs specific drum profiles with specific spring and track configurations, and a drum that’s “close enough” from a generic supplier will rarely wind cleanly or sit flush against the bearing plate.

We’re an independent Jacksonville service company, not a Clopay dealer, but we’ve installed and serviced Clopay equipment since 2001 and stock OEM-spec drums and cables for the most common residential series. For older Clopay doors (pre-2010 or so), we verify the drum by measuring the groove count and inner diameter rather than trusting the label alone. The aftermarket question matters here: quality-grade aftermarket cable with the right strand count and diameter (most Clopay residential doors use 7×19 aircraft-grade cable in 1/8″ or 3/32″ diameter) performs identically to OEM. Drums are a different story. We recommend OEM-spec drums on Clopay systems because the groove pitch and outer diameter are matched to that specific spring’s cycle geometry. A generic drum forces the spring to wind unevenly, and you’ll pay for it in spring wear inside eighteen months. If you can see the Clopay name on the spring anchor bracket or the bottom weather seal retainer, grab a photo of the end bearing plate; that tells us which drum you need before we even arrive.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Door jerks or tilts when opening. One cable has stretched or slipped out of the drum groove, so one side of the door is lifting faster than the other. If you keep running the opener this way, you’ll bend the top section or peel a track off the wall.
  • Visible fraying on the lift cable. Look along the cable where it meets the bottom bracket. If you see individual wire strands sticking outward, that cable is running on borrowed time. Jacksonville humidity accelerates this by holding moisture against the cable’s zinc coating, particularly in garages near the St. Johns River or in shaded spots in Avondale and Ortega.
  • Door catches or hangs about a third of the way up. The drum has worn a flat spot or developed a burr, so the cable binds mid-travel. You’ll often hear a clicking sound as the cable pops in and out of the groove.
  • Loose cable resting on top of the door. This is the “it’s already gone” symptom. The cable has fully unwound, the drum is now spinning free, and the torsion spring still holds dangerous tension even with the door down or partially down.
  • Scraping or grinding near the end bearing plate. The drum has shifted outward on the torsion tube and is rubbing against the plate or the wall bracket. Left alone, it gouges the plate and sometimes the shaft, turning a $200 cable and drum job into a $500 repair with new bearings and shaft work.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Clopay cable and drum replacement actually costs in Jacksonville, parts and labor included:

  • Single cable replacement (one side): $130 – $180
  • Both cables replaced (recommended in most cases): $150 – $250
  • Cable plus one drum: $180 – $250
  • Cables plus both drums: $220 – $300 (falls under track/cable/drum repair pricing, quoted before work starts)

What drives the range: whether one side or both failed, whether the drum is reusable or needs replacing, and which Clopay series you own. Reserve Collection and other high-cycle doors use heavier-gauge cable and sometimes a two-piece drum, which pushes you toward the top of the range. Every quote includes the cable, the drum(s) if needed, re-tensioning and balance testing, and a safety inspection of the springs and rollers. The price is written down and handed to you before a single bolt is turned. No verbal estimates, no invoice surprises.

And every cable and drum replacement from us carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: 365 days from the date of repair, if it fails, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job, for every Clopay owner in Jacksonville.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely inspect a Clopay door cable. Stand inside the closed garage, look at both corners where the cable meets the bottom bracket, and check for fraying. You can also run the door up and watch to see if one side is lagging. That’s all safe and useful to tell us over the phone.

What you should not do is remove or replace a cable or drum yourself. The torsion spring above your Clopay door holds enough stored tension to seriously injure you, and a cable that’s slipped off the drum is a loud signal that the system is loaded unevenly. Releasing the wrong bolt, in the wrong order, with the wrong tools, is how people end up in an emergency room. It’s not a “watch a video and try it Saturday” project. We replace Clopay cables and drums safely every week across Jacksonville, from Southside to the Beaches, and the right way to handle this one is to let a trained tech do it. Call (904) 549-9535 and we’ll have someone out with the right parts and the right torque sequence, not a best guess.
